A Licensed Clinical Social Worker provides information to a family. The Social Worker helps a family to see their strengths and locate resources and support. The impact and adjustment to a brain tumor diagnosis affects everyone in the family. Each patient and family member is unique, including siblings, grandparents, and other significant caregivers. Every family has a history that shapes a personal, emotional and spiritual response to a child’s serious illness. The Social Worker meets the patient and family during the initial assessment by the medical team and remains available throughout the care process.
Some areas in which the Social Worker may be helpful include:
- Emotional distress
- Relationship issues
- Legal concerns
- Education regarding adjustment of patient and family
- Community resources and parent-to-parent programs
- Cultural and/or religious practices
