Dr. George is Professor of Biostatistics in the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at Duke University Medical Center, where he serves as Director of Biostatistics in the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center and as Director of the Statistical Center of the Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB). He has been closely involved in the design, conduct, and analysis of cancer clinical trials and other research projects in cancer throughout his career, having published over 190 papers on this research. He has served on or chaired several data and safety monitoring boards for both treatment and prevention trials in cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia, lupus nephritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and liver fibrosis. Dr. George has also served on study sections and review committees for the National Cancer Institute and other institutes including Arthritis and Muscoskeletal and Skin Diseases, Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Child Health and Human Development, and Neurological Disorders and Stroke. He also has served as an editorial board member of several professional journals and regularly serves as reviewer for journals in the biomedical field and in statistics. Dr. George is a fellow of the American Statistical Association, served on the Executive Committee of the International Biometric Society for eight years, and past president of the Society for Clinical Trials. He has also served in several capacities for other professional societies including the American Statistical Association and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He recently completed a four-year term as the biostatistician for the Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee for the Food and Drug Administration.
The statisticians in the Cancer Statistical Center fall into one of two categories: faculty statisticians and staff statisticians. Each faculty statistician has a doctoral degree in statistics, biostatistics, or statistical genetics and, with one exception, has a primary appointment in the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, Duke University Medical Center. The exceptions are Dr. Michael Radmacher of Ohio State University and Dr. Donald Berry, who was formerly at Duke, but is now at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where he continues to serve as a CALGB statistician via a subcontract. The staff statisticians each have degrees in statistics and are employees of Duke University Medical Center in the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center, except the four statisticians at Ohio State University. Statistician effort not allocated to the CALGB is allocated to research programs and projects in the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center, independent research, teaching, or other activities. There are currently twenty doctoral-level statisticians and twenty-two masters-level statisticians in this group.
