The mission of the Duke Oncology Network is to provide an array if Oncology related services in a regional Network of community cancer programs that have made a commitment toward excellence in cancer care through patient care, clinical research and education. The Duke Oncology Network seeks to support and strengthen the mission of the affiliated organizations by:

The Duke Oncology Network provides physicians in these communities with access to cutting-edge research programs and provides education and training programs to physicians, nurses, and other health professionals. At twenty-three sites in six states, almost 16,000 new cancer patients were seen last year and had access to the services offered by the Duke Oncology Network. The Duke Oncology Network provides new cancer education initiatives directed at patients in the communities and provides patients access to clinical trials for a variety of new cancer treatments. In 2005, over 700 patients in these communities were enrolled in clinical trials.

The Duke Oncology Network capitalizes on Duke’s strengths in Oncology and provides one collaborative group to bring these strengths into local community practices. This allows us to leverage specialized knowledge in research, clinical practice, practice management, program development, and continuing medical education to improve cancer care delivery to our affiliates through the Southeast.

Our vision for the Duke Oncology Network is best represented in our mission statement:

  • Providing state-of-art cancer care to the communities we serve;
  • Providing and promoting cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment through clinical research;
  • Offering educational opportunities to healthcare practitioners and the community at large; and
  • Enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of cancer care delivery through performance improvement and outcomes measures.

Affiliations with the Duke Oncology Network can have one of three primary focuses:

1. Clinical Professional Services and Oncology Management Affiliation

Hospitals within close geographic proximity to Durham, NC that offer quality patient care programs and seek to broaden their scope of service to include Oncology are candidates for an Oncology Management and Professional Services Affiliation. In these cases, DON and the community hospital partner to develop and manage a clinical oncology program, whether medical oncology, radiation oncology, or both. Clinics are staffed by Duke University Medical Center physicians, physician extenders, and fellows.

2. Research Affiliation

Many Oncology programs reach a point in development where quality patient care and clinical operations are in place. They realize that the standard of care for Oncology services includes providing patient access to research and clinical trials. A Research Affiliation with the Duke Oncology Network offers assistance with development and ongoing management of a quality clinical trials program, as well as access to in-house Duke studies, national cooperative group trials such as CALGB (Cancer and Leukemia Group B), pharmaceutical industry studies, and collaborative research.

3. Program Development Affiliation

In response to development, growth, and expansion needs of hospitals not within ready geographic proximity to Durham, NC, the Duke Oncology Network offers a Program Development Affiliation. This affiliation combines consultative management and administrative functions outlined in the Management Affiliation, clinical relationships between community-based providers and faculty/staff at Duke, and clinical trials development and management outlined in the Research Affiliation. This relationship offers the opportunity for customization depending on the capabilities, needs and interests of the affiliate organization, with the intent of providing full-spectrum comprehensive oncology services. Programmatic development can be comprehensive, or can center on a specific subspecialty program, such as Bone Marrow Transplant.
