2009 Accelerating Anticancer Agent Development and Validation

A groundbreaking event aimed at accelerating the testing and approval of promising and anti-cancer drugs and strategies.

The 2009 Accelerating Anticancer Agent Validation and Development Workshop was held on June 17-19 in North Bethesda, Maryland.

Dozens of new anticancer agents are discovered each year, but many of them fall short of reaching patients because of the painstaking process of drug testing and development. Scientists are trained to study the biologic basis of cancer or to treat patients, but most have not been trained to conduct multi-phase clinical trials or to negotiate the regulatory processes that lead to drug approval.

The "Accelerating Anticancer Agent Development and Validation" workshop, established in 2004, is designed to bring academia and industry leaders together to focus specifically on understanding and improving the process for cancer drug development. The goal of the workshop is to expedite the development and validation process for new cancer treatments so that treatments can be made available to patients sooner.

The three-day collaborative workshop provides a “small group” atmosphere during which early career scientists with data from promising anti-cancer agents work with mentors and receive training, instruction and immediate feedback on how they can most efficiently develop and validate new anti-cancer drugs to diagnose, treat and prevent various cancers. In addition to the small group breakout sessions, participants attend a "Meet the Professor" session during which they receive individual counseling and advice from faculty members and FDA experts.
