Adopt-A-Family Program Who is eligible for an Adopt-A-Family team? Single caregivers far from extended support systems are our main priority. Who's on the team? 8-10 people form area churches assist you during your stay at Duke. Teams consist of a leader, child care volunteers, computer volunteers, meal volunteers and social volunteers. How are Adopt-A-Family Teams trained? Adopt-A-Family teams participate in a training session led by the PBMT Family Support Program Director, Duke Children's medical staff, and local experts. Training covers information about cancer, bone marrow/stem cell transplantation, the psycho-social needs of the patient and family, the role of the healthcare provider, communication skills and grief/loss issues. Where do Adopt-A-Family teams serve? Adopt-A-Family teams serve in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. They work with families in the unit, as well as in the clinic and in outpatient settings such as Ronald McDonald House.
