The Sydney Trader "Beads of
Courage" Program
Building a necklace is a fun and meaningful activity that provides an opportunity to portray each child's transplant experience. Through the use of colorful beads as meaningful symbols of the different "steps" along the transplant path, the necklace provides a visual and tangible expression of each individual journey.
Our goal is to acknowledge the courage that it takes for each child to have a stem cell or bone marrow transplant. This is our way to honor the difficulty, the length of time, and the sheer perseverance of each child who comes to Duke for transplant. We hope this necklace will be a significant reminder of how hard they worked.

"steps" that our patients take through transplant and the
corresponding bead that they earn for their necklace:
Radiation: Glow in the Dark
Central Line: Red Tube
Chemotherapy: Silver Star
Hair Loss: Wooden Head
Transplant Day: Round Fimo
Granulocytes: White Heart
TPN: Orange Heart
Dressing Change: Red Heart
Contact/Respiratory Isolation: Yellow Bead
Mouth Care: Orange Bead
Scans: Yellow Round Flower
Tube Insertion: Blue Tube
Surgery: Purple Heart
Spinal Tap/LP: Green Round Flower
PCA Pump: Black Bead
PICU: Green Heart
Dialysis: Yellow Glass Bead
Bone Marrow Aspirate: Teal Round Flower

30/60/90 days inpatient: Red Star
