Crisis Team

Because all of the patients and families of the Pediatric Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant Program come together at a critical time and because they have shared common experiences in an uncommonly difficult situation, strong bonds often develop among fellow patients and families. When a patient dies, the other children and families are often very personally and severely affected. The Family Support Program staff developed the Crisis Team Support Program to ensure that these other patients and families receive immediate, effective and careful communications in times of death. Caregivers are also provided a chance to express their feelings during an afternoon group meeting. Staff are trained and grouped together to form the crisis teams. Together they provide needed communication, comfort, and support to the patients and families at the time of a fellow patient's death.

Crisis Team Goals

  • to gently relay news of a patient's death to other patients and families
  • to educate patients' caregivers on ways to effectively communicate the death to their own child
  • to offer patients and families the team's caring, strength and comfort during a very difficult time..
